Winehouse ex-husband ‘will make it’

Mitch Winehouse has said his daughter’s ex-husband “is going to get through this” after Blake Fielder-Civil was left fighting for his life following an apparent drink and drugs binge.

Mr Fielder-Civil, 30, was found choking in bed by partner Sarah Aspin last Friday before being rushed to hospital with multiple organ failure.

Mr Fielder-Civil, a recovering drug addict, had gone out drinking with a friend the previous day and Ms Aspin, mother of his 15-month-old son, said she believed he might have taken an illicit substance.

He was put into an induced coma and on a life support machine in hospital in Dewsbury.

Writing on microblogging website Twitter, Mr Winehouse said: “It looks like Blake is going to get through this. That’s good news.”

He later added on Twitter: “I am not supporting Blake but I am praying for his recovery.”

Earlier in the week, he had asked fans to pray for Mr Fielder-Civil saying: “Remember Amy loved him”.

Ms Aspin, 34, who met Ms Winehouse’s former husband in rehab three years ago, told a newspaper: “The doctors said they put him in a coma to help him and due to infection.

“I’m praying he’ll survive, but I’m having to prepare myself that he may never wake up.”

Ms Aspin said Mr Fielder-Civil attended an appointment with the Probation Service in Morley and then met a friend the day before he was taken to hospital.

He returned home slurring his words and staggering before being put to bed. The next morning Ms Aspin woke to find him unconscious. Paramedics confirmed he had swallowed his tongue.

Mr Fielder-Civil has long battled heroin addiction and spent time in prison in 2007.

He was jailed again in June last year for burglary and possession of an imitation firearm before being freed with a tag two weeks ago in preparation for his full release.

The former music video assistant married pop star Ms Winehouse in 2007 and they divorced two years later.
