Winter Garden to open up at night

COUNCIL chiefs who are trying to attract more people into Sheffield city centre during the economic downturn have announced that one of the city centre’s most iconic buildings will open at night.

The Winter Garden, which is close to both the Town Hall and Peace Gardens will be made “more accessible” during the summer months by remaining open until 11pm Monday to Saturday.

The building, which currently closes in the early evening, will also be open until 8pm on Sunday and council economic bosses said they hoped it would encourage people to visit at night.

Visitors will be able to spend time in the Winter Garden, which is also linked to Sheffield’s Millennium Galleries and the Mercure Hotel, during night-time hours starting on Friday, May 7.

Coun Colin Ross, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for employment, enterprise and development said the Winter Garden also provided a safe walkthrough between the theatres in Tudor Square and bars and restaurants elsewhere.

The Winter Garden is home to over 2,500 plants from around the world.
