Wirral Labour MP to give up seat

Labour MP Stephen Hesford is to stand down from Parliament at the next General Election.

The party said the 52-year-old Wirral West MP was quitting “for family reasons”.

Mr Hesford won the Merseyside constituency from the Tories in 1997 and held onto it with a slim majority of 1,097 in 2005. It is high on the list of seats the Tories need to win to take power.
