Witnesses to two attacksby thugssought

YORK police are investigating separate attacks in which a couple enjoying a night out and a man and woman were targeted by thugs.

In the latest incident on Monday, a local man and woman were threatened by a robber wielding a baseball bat at around 4am at the junction of Brownlow Street and Lowther Street.

The victims were both 19 and the young woman was ordered to hand over her mobile phone and cash. When she refused, the robber made off towards the nearby Spar shop before heading towards Clarence Street with a second man.

The attacker was white, early 20s, around 5ft 7in, and of medium build, wearing a grey hooded zip top with the hood up, and grey tracksuit bottoms. There was no description of the second man.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident by police who have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Meanwhile, York police are also appealing for witnesses after a couple were assaulted by a gang between 1.30am and 2am on Wednesday last week.

The 19-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man from Riccall, were standing outside Subway in Nessgate when they were set on by a woman and a group of men.

The man suffered a black eye and had stitches to an injury to his eyebrow. The woman suffered leg injuries. They were only able to describe the female attacker.

She was white, late teens, around 5ft 6in, slim, and had black hair tied in a pony tail. She was wearing a pink stripy top with dark jeans and dark-coloured boots.

PC Peter Smith, of York Police, said: “This was a nasty incident which could have been a lot worse but for the intervention of two men who came to the assistance of the couple.

“I am appealing for those men to come forward as they could have information vital to the investigation. I am also appealing for anybody who witnessed the incident to contact the police or Crimestoppers with any information they may have.”
