Woman, 19, hit by tractor after pulling driver out of smoke-filled car near Ripley, North Yorkshire

A 19-year-old woman is in a critical condition in hospital after she was hit by a tractor when she went to rescue the driver of a smoke-filled car in Ripley, North Yorkshire.

The woman, a passenger in a silver 4x4, had got out of the car after it had filled with smoke, and managed to rescue the driver, when she was hit by a passing tractor which was travelling away from Ripley towards Bishop Thornton.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Fountains Road at 5.17pm on Wednesday, January 27.

Police have said the tractor did not initially stop at the scene, but was quickly traced by officers.

He assisted police with enquiries and has been released under investigation.

The woman suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police are appealing to anyone with dashcam footage or witness to the collision and anyone who saw the vehicles involved on Fountains Road to contact them.

"The broken down silver Hyundai 4×4 had been travelling away from Ripley. The tractor was a green John Deere towing a flat trailer carrying bales wrapped in black plastic. It was also travelling away from Ripley.

"Police are particularly keen to trace a car which was believed to have been travelling towards Ripley at the time of the collision and may have witnessed the collision or seen the tractor passing the broken down 4×4."
