Woman of 31falls to death from cliff

A Whitby woman, aged 31, died after plunging from cliffs near Whitby Abbey yesterday despite being airlifted to hospital for emergency treatment.

The 999 services were called to the scene on the East Cliff at 3.52am following a report that a woman was threatening to kill herself. Officers saw her on the edge of the East Cliff. Two minutes later she fell.

The inshore lifeboat crew found the woman unconscious but still breathing. She was brought back to shore and placed in an ambulance.

She was then transferred into the Cleveland Police helicopter and flown to the James Cook University Hospital on Teesside, but pronounced dead at at 6am.

North Yorkshire Police said the incident was not being treated as suspicious. Anyone with information is asked to contact Whitby Police on 0845 60 60 24 7.
