Woman, 77, rescued from Huddersfield blaze after her bin is set on fire

A 77-YEAR-OLD woman was rescued by firefighters after a wheelie bin was set on fire outside her home in Huddersfield.

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for information following the incident, which occurred in Clayton West in the early hours of Monday morning.

When the emergency services arrived at the house in Holmfield Road at around 1am, the fire had spread from the bin to the property, police said.

The woman was taken to hospital where she was treated for smoke inhalation.

David Tattersfield of the Kirklees Arson Taskforce said: “When school’s out for summer, we tend to see an increase in deliberate fires.

“While fire-fighters are tackling these deliberately started fires, they are unavailable to attend other life-threatening incidents, which means crews from further afield have to be called in.

“Fire-fighters have been called to such fires on a number of occasions recently and I believe it’s only a matter of time before a member of the public or a fire-fighter is seriously injured.”

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact Huddersfield CID via 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
