The 57-year-old woman was taken to hospital by air ambulance following the single-vehicle incident on the A169 at Saltergate Bank.

Two children were also hurt.

It happened at about 4.50pm on Friday when the silver Renault Modus car travelling towards Whitby left the road.

It went down an embankment before travelling about 150 metres and coming to rest by a tree.

All three people in the car - a woman driver and a girl and boy - suffered injuries and were airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The woman, who is from Coventry, is in a critical condition.

North Yorkshire Police’s roads policing group is appealing for witnesses.
