Woman badly injured in police bike accident

A WOMAN has suffered serious injuries after being knocked down by a police motorcylist in South Yorkshire.

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for information after the 31-year-old woman was badly injured when she was struck by a police motorcycle in the Burngreave area of Sheffield.

A police spokeswoman said the woman, from Sheffield, was attempting to cross Barnsley Road, when she was hit by the white BMW motorcycle, ridden by a 44-year-old male police officer.

The woman was struck 30 metres (33 yards) from the junction with Orphanage Road.

The police motorcycle is believed to have been travelling out of the city along Barnsley Road when the collision happened around 12.10pm yesterday.

The woman sustained a broken right leg and was being treated at Sheffield Northern General Hospital last night.

The police motorcyclist was not injured.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with information that could assist officers should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 468 of 29 March 2012.

No information was provided on whether the police motorcylist was responding to an incident at the time of the collision.
