Woman dies after hit and run in stolen car

The 62-year-old pedestrian, struck by a grey or silver BMW shortly before 1pm today, was taken to hospital by air ambulance but police have now confirmed that she has died.

Police say the BMW was believed to have been stolen - and that it had been seen by officers in an unmarked car shortly before the crash - although officers were not in “active pursuit”.

“The female pedestrian was taken to hospital by air ambulance after being in collision with a grey or silver BMW five series saloon on Station Road near to the junction with King George’s Court in Stainforth at around 12.55pm,” South Yorkshire Police said in a statement.

“The BMW, thought to have been displaying a registration plate with the prefix HV07, is believed to have collided with a parked vehicle on Station Road, before the collision with the pedestrian.

“Prior to both collisions, the BMW was seen leaving the Asda car park on Station Road, close to where officers in an unmarked police car were patrolling.

“The police vehicle was not actively pursuing the BMW when the collisions occurred, however the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission due to the earlier involvement of officers from South Yorkshire Police.”

Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.
