Woman dies in Baildon house fire

FIRE chiefs have warned of the dangers of smoking in the home after a 59-year-old woman died in a blaze at a house in Shipley.

The fire is believed to have been started by a discarded cigarette, West Yorkshire Fire Service said, and there were no smoke alarms fitted inside the property in Baildon, a spokeswoman added.

Firefighters tried to resuscitate the victim after being called to the house in Collier Lane, Baildon, at 11.55pm on Wednesday.

The woman was pronounced dead on arrival at Airedale General Hospital, the spokeswoman confirmed.

She added: "You should never smoke in bed and always use a proper ashtray made out of a material that won't burn.

"Always extinguish cigarettes properly and we can't emphasise enough that you should have fire alarms fitted."
