Her husband, who was driving the Golf, escaped unharmed but three other passengers – a female relative and the dead woman's two grandsons aged nine and six – were taken to York District Hospital with minor injuries.

A five-year-old girl in the Peugeot was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with suspected spinal injuries. Yesterday she was in a serious but stable condition.

The Peugeot driver was uninjured but his wife and their nine-year-old daughter were also treated at York for minor injuries.
