Woman falls 30ft to death from flat

A man has been arrested after a woman plunged 30ft to her death from a flat above a Bridlington street.

Police, who were called to the scene on South Marine Drive in the resort at around 11.30pm on Monday night, say they are treating it as an “unexplained” death.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, had suffered serious injuries after apparently falling 30ft from a first floor balcony in a block of three flats.

Officers arrived at the scene before paramedics arrived and tried to help her but she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police cordoned off the scene and began house-to-house inquiries.

A 36-year-old local man was arrested in connection with the incident. He is being held in custody.

Yesterday morning a forensic tent covered the spot and the area remained cordoned off.

The woman has yet to be formally identified, but her next of kin have been told and are being supported by police officers.

Noreen Jackson, who owns the Marina Cafe next door, with husband Alan, said the occupants of the flat had only moved in recently. The cafe was closed yesterday while police carried out their investigations.

She said: “It was next door to us but we didn’t hear anything. It was only when we got up this morning that we saw what had happened.”

Lisa Castleton, who has run Marine Drive News shop next to the cafe for the past eight years and lives in a neighbouring flat in the block, said: “The first I knew about it happening was the noise of police sirens around midnight.

“We didn’t hear anything earlier in the night and I don’t know any of the people who lived there.”

Mayor of Bridlington Coun Cyril Marsburg said: “We are obviously all shocked by it.”

Police are asking anyone who saw or heard anything in the area around the time of the incident to call them.

Witnesses should call Humberside Police on the non-emergency number 101.
