It was not clear last night whether the woman's death was being treated as suspicious.

A police spokesman said: "At 7.30am today we were contacted by a member of the public after a body was found in the water at Clarence Dock in Leeds. The underwater search team attended the scene and recovered a woman's body from the water.

"A post mortem has not yet been carried out. Enquiries are still ongoing to establish how the woman came to be found in the water."

A police forensic tent remained at the dock until yesterday afternoon. The investigation is being led by Detective Superintendent Paul Taylor of West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team.
