Woman hit by train after fall from scooter

A PENSIONER was airlifted to hospital yesterday after she lost control of her mobility scooter and it rolled off a station platform, into the path of an oncoming train.

Barnsley railway station was closed following the incident shortly before 2.40pm when the woman was struck by the Leeds to Nottingham train which was pulling into the platform.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “The woman, aged 73, from Monk Bretton, was trapped under the train for a short period of time before being freed by the fire service and taken to Northern General Hospital by air ambulance. Her condition has been described as serious.”

The railway line between Sheffield and Wakefield Kirkgate was reopened at around 3.45pm, while the southbound line on which the woman was struck reopened about an hour later.
