Women escape as car ends up in reservoir

TWO women managed to escape a car which crashed through a wall and into a Yorkshire reservoir.

Police said the pair were in a black Land Rover Defender and were heading towards Addingham from Skipton, when the vehicle left the A65 road yesterday lunchtime before crashing through a wall and into Chelker Reservoir, near Addingham.

Both the driver of the vehicle, a woman believed to be in her 50s, and her passenger, an 89-year-old woman, managed to get out of the vehicle but the elderly woman had suffered a head injury in the incident and was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment.

The road was closed in both directions until early evening, with drivers urged to avoid the area as police began an investigation into the collision and recovered the vehicle from the water.

Officers appealed for anyone who may have seen the incident to come forward and contact North Yorkshire Police on its non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number NYP-15052012-0195.
