Wood walks offer food for thought

As mushrooms and toadstools start to spring up in woodlands across Yorkshire, an ex-forest ranger has launched a series of walks to help people know their “ink caps” from their “blushers”.

Organised by the Forestry Commission, visitors are being invited to join veteran mushroom spotter, Brian Walker, on four fungi forages in Dalby Forest, near Pickering, on October 2 and 9.

Mr Walker, seen above with a fly agaric, from Thornton Dale, said: “There are plenty of varieties about, helped by the more moist and warmer weather of recent weeks.”

“There are hundreds of different kinds of fungi in Dalby, with species like the edible Cep a local speciality. But plenty of other fungi are pretty nasty if eaten, so it’s really important to know what you are looking at.”
