Wool market to open for extra day

TRADERS at Doncaster's popular Wool Market have agreed to open their stalls for an extra day during the summer as part of a campaign to make the town centre more appealing.

Staff from Doncaster Council opened negotiations with stallholders several weeks ago after business owners in the food and fish markets began opening their stalls on Wednesdays.

Traditional trading days have been Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, but Mayor Peter Davies, who has declared himself a strong supporter of the market, said he wanted stalls to open more often.

He said: "This is good news for traders who can benefit from the footfall generated by the busy antique and bric-a-brac market that stands outside the Wool Market every Wednesday.

"It is also good news for shoppers who will have more than 50 extra shops to choose from. I am determined to restore our markets to their former glory and have committed 150,000 towards improvements."

The Wool Market was the subject of an extensive refurbishment scheme in 2007 under previous mayor Martin Winter, when the present building was re-roofed and restored.

A Wool Market has been held in the town for more than 800 years.
