Work to begin on A1M footbridge

WORK is set to begin today to improve Barrel Lane footbridge, which crosses the A1M in Doncaster.

A range of improvements is being carried out by the Highways Agency to prolong the life of the bridge, which crosses the motorway near Junction 36.

These will include waterproofing and resurfacing the bridge deck, as well as repairing and painting the parapet and mesh panels. Work will take place on the footbridge 24 hours a day for completion by the end of March.

In order to carry out the improvements, the footbridge will be closed to pedestrians, who will instead be diverted via Warmsworth Interchange.

At times the road under the bridge and the slip roads at Junction 36 will also need to be closed, although this will happen only during off-peak hours.

When the motorway is shut, traffic on the northbound and southbound carriageways will be diverted up and over via the entry and exit slip roads at Junction 36.

Highways Agency project manager Tim Calvert said yesterday: "These works will improve the safety and prolong the life of this footbridge.

"We would ask all road users to take extra care when travelling through the roadworks."
