Work to begin soon on long-delayed park-and-ride facility for commuters

The new facility next to Dore and Totley station is aimed at commuters from the western suburbs of the city, as well as motorists from Derbyshire. But the venture will also ease problems caused by cars parking on roads in the area.

It follows long-running complaints from local people who have also criticised the length of time to put the scheme in place. It will now open three years after land for the project was originally purchased.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has secured £400,000 for building works which will see a 130-space car park built on the site of a former garden centre.

A new entrance to the car park and station will also be built and a pedestrian crossing will be provided on Abbeydale Road.

Under the plans, a covered cycle shelter will also be installed near the platform entrance.

Lighting and CCTV coverage will be provided throughout the
site.

Work will begin on November 12 and is expected to be completed by next spring.

Dore has suffered parking problems for some time with vehicles causing obstructions by being parked in streets nearby.

Officials hope the new facility will resolve the problems and open up travel options for those travelling from Dore, Totley, and Millhouses in Sheffield.

David Brown, director general of the passenger transport executive, said: “This proposed facility will be a tremendous asset to the area around Dore, where people have been calling for some time for more parking spaces.

“This location is ideal for a park and ride, being adjacent to the station.

“It will not only be of great benefit to the locality of Dore, Totley and Millhouses but also to commuters from the Sheffield city
region in neighbouring Derbyshire.

“It is another example of what SYPTE does for the region, which is to identify the transport priorities which are needed and to secure the funding to allow it to be put in place.”
