Work begins on bypass for Dales town of Bedale

Work has begun on a long-awaited bypass that will be a gateway to the Yorkshire Dales.

North Yorkshire County Council said work has already started to create roundabouts at the Bedale and Northallerton ends of the Bedale, Aiskew and Leeming Bar bypass as part of the first phase of the project.

“The Bedale bypass will greatly reduce congestion in Bedale, as well as Leeming Bar and Aiskew,” said David Bowe, the county council’s corporate director for business and environmental services. “There will obviously be some disruption caused by construction works but our contractors will make sure that this is kept to a minimum.”

Signals will be in use off-peak today and tomorrow on the A684 Northallerton Road, near Spring House Farm. The council estimates the bypass, due to open in autumn next year, will cut traffic by half.
