WORK starts today on a £1.3m upgrade of a water treatment works – most of it hidden underground.

Engineering specialists Byzak Entec are improving the underground facility at Holmbridge, near Holmfirth, to boost the quality of water received by thousands of residents.

The work will see much of the current equipment replaced with new parts to ensure the plant continues to run in an energy efficient manner.

Holmbridge water treatment works, off Brownhill Lane, takes water from a number of reservoirs to produce up to 35 million litres of drinking water everyday.

It different to most treatment facilities as it is mainly underground. It was designed in 1995 to ensure it had no aesthetic impact on the landscape.

Work should be complete by the end of July, with all activity contained within the site, said a spokesman.

Contractors will not need to access any properties and residents are being urged to be on their guard against bogus callers who may try to use the scheme as a ploy.

If in any doubt, a caller’s identification can be verified by calling Yorkshire Water on 0845 1 24 24 24.
