Work due to start on better sewage system

THOUSANDS of households and businesses will benefit from a major upgrade to North Yorkshire’s sewage systems which will be carried out during the summer.

Yorkshire Water announced yesterday that work will start within the next week on the £500,000 improvements to its sewage works in Boroughbridge.

Contractors will install new screens and screening units which will filter incoming sewage.

The upgrade will significantly improve the efficiency of the treatment process, ensuring water that is discharged back into the River Ure exceeds stringent legislation, according to Yorkshire Water.

The new sieves are being fitted to more effectively remove the increasing amount of rubbish which is entering the works, such as sanitary products, cotton wool buds and nappies.

In addition, they will also remove grit from the waste water.

The treatment works receives up to 13 gallons a second and serves about 10,000 customers in the surrounding area.

The upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of September. Yorkshire Water has stressed that it does not expect any disruption to the public because the work is taking place within the site.
