Work to halt eel decline

Pete Turner and Peter Mischenko, fisheries officers for the Enviroment Agency releasing eels into the River Calder in Dewsbury.

Some of the young eels, known as elvers, were caught in the River Severn and transported to Yorkshire before being released yesterday. The Calder eels will eventually leave the region's rivers to spawn at sea. Their offspring will then be swept back to the eastern Atlantic coastline. Thousands of eels were also released at the RSPB Old Moor in the Dearne Valley in South Yorkshire.
