Work pledge in mental health charter

WAKEFIELD Council has signed a charter which aims to get more people with learning difficulties and mental health problems into work.

It hopes to help 40 people into work via the Homes and Jobs for Vulnerable Adults Programme Exemplar Employer Project.

Wakefield Council's Cabinet member for adults and health, Maureen Cummings said: "Regardless of the current economic climate and potential changes to the way public services are delivered, we have a moral imperative to recognise the valuable contribution these people can make.

"These are people who might have experienced discrimination in employment and could now be discouraged from looking for a job. We don't think this should jeopardise their chances of getting a job because, given appropriate support, the vast majority of people who have experienced mental ill health continue to work successfully."

More than 30 private businesses in Wakefield have signed up to the Mindful Employer Charter alongside NHS Wakefield District, South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and West Yorkshire Police.
