Work to replace main will stop repeated bursts

WATER engineers have announced plans to replace a cast iron Victorian main which has burst a dozen times in recent years causing serious problems for households.

Work will start on Monday, January 7, in Oughtibridge, near Sheffield, to install a new plastic water main pipe, which Yorkshire Water officials said will be “much more robust and consequently far less likely to burst”.

Engineering contractors Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions will start the work on Bridge Hill with this phase of the work expected to take three weeks. A section of the road will be closed.

At the same time, pipe cleaning work which began in nearby Stocksbridge earlier this year will continue after Christmas, moving into Oughtibridge in February.

Engineers said the work would give water pipes in the area “an MOT” and ensure residents have high quality water and reduce discolouration.
