Work to start tomorrow on sports pavilion at golf course

THE building of a new combined sports pavilion at the City of Wakefield Golf Course is set to begin.

It will contain changing facilities at the site for local football clubs including Old Thornesians FC, St Ignatius FC and Wakefield Jets FC, and Azaads cricket club, as well as providing a clubhouse for the golf course and become the new home of the City of Wakefield Golf Club.

Coun Denise Jeffery, deputy leader and cabinet member for sport, said: "This fantastic facility will be a major step forward in the delivery of improved sporting facilities in the district.

"I'm also delighted to say that it will be home to the City of Wakefield Golf Club and hope this building will help encourage more people to get involved in sport through the different local clubs who will benefit from this council facility."

It is expected that the sports pavilion will be ready for use by late summer . The building of the facility will enable Wakefield Council to activate a new eco-friendly underground irrigation system at the golf course, which was recently installed.

It is envisaged this eco-friendly system will save thousands of litres of water over the years, reducing the council's utility bills.

The system includes two glass fibre water tanks that have a capacity of 150 cubic metres of brown water storage which will then be used for irrigation of the golf course. The tanks will be filled with rain water.

The roof gutters will be designed to ensure all rainwater is captured and directed to these tanks. A new plant room located inside the new facility will house the irrigation control, pumps and new UV water treatment equipment. The scheme should provide most of the water for irrigation of the course.

The building has been designed for Wakefield Council by the NPS Group, and Irwins Ltd have been appointed to build it.

Coun Jeffery will be joined by Coun Betty Rhodes, chair of the health and social care scrutiny committee, to cut the first turf before building work begins at 12pm tomorrow at the site off Horbury Road, Wakefield.
