Work starts to cut sewer flood risk

RESIDENTS in Withernsea should soon be at less risk of sewer flooding after construction of an underground waste water storage chamber.

Yorkshire Water will begin work next week on a £1m storage tank in fields to the rear of Hollym Road that will be able to hold 1.2m litres of sewage.

The chamber will collect storm water during wet weather and hold it until it is safe to release it back into the local sewer network.

To further improve the capacity of the system, the company is also installing a new larger sewer between Hollym Road and the junction of Chestnut Avenue, and then along a 150-metre section of Chestnut Avenue.

John Bond, of Yorkshire Water’s community engagement team, said: “More intense storms resulting from climate change, increased housing development and the paving over of green spaces are all increasing the amount of surface water entering the sewer network.

“This, combined with people disposing of inappropriate waste in the sewers, is contributing to an increased risk of sewers flooding homes and properties. We believe, like our customers, that sewer flooding is unacceptable.”
