Work starts on repairs to historic bridge damaged in traffic accident

WORK has started on repairs to an historic bridge as a Yorkshire council attempts to provide a lifeline to villagers and allay concerns that local enterprises could be driven out of business.

Plans have been announced to reopen the listed Sutton Bridge, which links Elvington in North Yorkshire and Sutton on Derwent in the East Riding, earlier than first anticipated.

The Yorkshire Post revealed last week that villagers had warned that the future of local businesses could be thrown into jeopardy while the bridge is closed because passing custom had already dramatically reduced. Villagers wrote to East Yorkshire MP Greg Knight and Selby MP John Grogan about their concerns.

It had been initially predicted that the bridge would remain closed for up to eight weeks until the middle of March.

However, investigations carried out by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which is overseeing the project, have confirmed that it will be safe to re-open the bridge once temporary repairs are completed.

A council spokesman confirmed yesterday that the bridge could now reopen in a fortnight

The bridge was damaged earlier this month after it is thought that a large vehicle ran into it.
