Workers strike overausterity plan cuts
Portugal's public sector workers staged a 24-hour strike yesterday in the latest protest to hit a European country imposing a national austerity plan.
The country experienced disruption at schools, hospitals and public offices as government staff protested against a planned pay freeze and other cuts. Unions representing more than 500,000 civil servants joined forces for the first time in four years.
