Workshops for parents-to-be help decision on home births

MOTHERS and fathers-to-be interested in having their baby at home are invited to free workshops around Bradford.

The sessions will involve discussions about the practical aspects of home births and equip prospective parents and birth supporters with information and advice.

Participants will also learn about the support available from midwives at the Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI).

BRI consultant midwife Alison Brown said: "The workshops are a chance for expectant parents in the city to find out more about the many different choices they have when it comes to giving birth.

"Whether this is your first child or you've given birth before, exploring your options and learning about the birth process can help build your confidence and prepare you for your baby's birth.

"Midwives from the hospital will also talk about the many different birthing options, including home births and water births as well as providing opportunities to take part in discussions and practical workshops."

As well as midwives, new parents, Deeanne Binns and Simon Peacock, from East Bierley, will also be on hand to talk about their own recent home birth experience. Miss Binns, 39, gave birth to the couple's first child, Jeanmarie, in the comfort of their own home in September. "Because of my age, I never dreamt a homebirth would be an option but when my midwife, Sue Winrow, suggested it, I loved the idea.

"Simon was a little bit hesitant and he was scared as well in case anything would go wrong, but we chatted to a few people at the BRI and we decided that if we could go for it, we would, and it worked out fantastically."

The couple have now offered to talk to other parents about their experiences because their homebirth worked so well for them.

"Once you become a parent you instantly realise that other parents are important sources of knowledge and they can give you good tips on what and what not to do," she added.

The workshops take place on:

July 16, September 24 and November 12at Farnham Road Children's Centre.

October 23 at Eccleshill Clinic.

Anyone interested can call Caroline Guy on 364500 to book a place on the workshops.
