26 arrested over football fan clashes

Detectives have arrested 26 people following clashes between three rival groups of football fans in Huddersfield.

It is believed that fans of Huddersfield Town, Bradford City and Leeds United were involved in the disorder on Saturday, May 19, 2012 – the afternoon of the Championship Play-Off final.

The main incident took place on Westgate and Market Street, in Huddersfield, before continuing in the railway station and spilling on to the tracks.

Several men chased each other through the platforms and eventually down the track towards Deighton causing 61 trains to be delayed and seven to be cancelled altogether.

In all, the disruption caused 893 minutes of delays and cost thousands in lost earnings, a loss footed by the taxpayer.

The 26 men and youths arrested ranged in age from 15 to 47 and come from Huddersfield, Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Selby.

Detectives from Huddersfield CID and British Transport Police are working together to investigate the disorder.

Acting Det Sgt Nick Doyle of Huddersfield CID said: “Detectives from Huddersfield CID and the British Transport Police have identified and arrested several people believed to be involved in the football related violence and have warned that further arrests will take place.”
