9/11 remembered: Sad reprise for Broadway stars

Broadway theatres last night marked the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a performance featuring stars including Matthew Broderick and Brooke Shields.

They sang the anthem New York, New York at the heart of the city’s theatre district, joined by Tony Award winners Bebe Neuwirth, Sutton Foster, Joel Grey and Harvey Fierstein.

The performance took place at the location where they performed the same song at an event just weeks after the attacks.

Daniel Rodriguez, the former New York police officer who became a full-time singer after gaining recognition for his operatic rendition of God Bless America following the attacks, also appeared.

Paul Libin, chairman of The Broadway League, which represents theatre owners and producers, said: “Ten years ago Broadway united with the city to communicate that the shows must go on, just as life must.”

“And now Broadway is banding together again to inspire participation in charitable projects in honour of those lost.”
