Armstrong to break silence on Oprah over doping accusations

Lance Armstrong will break his silence over damning accusations of drug doping on the Oprah show next Thursday.

But the cyclist’s appearance has led to suggestions it will not directly address claims by the US Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) which said the 41-year-old and his US Postal Service team ran “the most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping programme that sport has ever seen”.

British cyclist David Millar, a member of the athletes commission for the World Anti-Doping Agency, said: “Only Lance would get to have his moment of truth, if that’s what it will be, in front of Oprah Winfrey. It is not sitting in front of a judge or a disciplinary hearing being properly questioned. ”

Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles by the International Cycling Union (UCI), following the report by the Usada and the TV show will be Armstrong’s first formal interview since being banned for life by UCI.

A spokesman for Oprah Winfrey Network said in an email: “No payment for the interview. No editorial control, no question is off limits.”
