Cameron pledges UK will lead world in helping Assad victims

David Cameron’s “humiliating defeat” in the Commons forced Barack Obama to go to Congress, a retired US general has said.

Former vice chief of staff of the US army Jack Keane told the BBC the Americans would “much rather” have UK support for any strikes.

General Keane told the BBC that he understood President Obama was planning a substantial intervention in Syria, with increased support for the opposition forces, including training from US troops, although this has since been denied.

But Gen Keane insisted the US was not seeking regime change.
