Fans flee gunfire at 
US music festival

Several thousand people had gathered at the arena for a Fourth of July party at the Houston Caribbean Festival.

Witnesses told police they saw a man open fire in the early hours of Saturday, hitting four men, police spokesman Jodi Silva said.

“Everybody was having a good time until someone shot a firearm,” Ms Silva said.

Immediately after the shots were heard, people panicked and began to flee, Ms Silva said.

Two females were hurt as people rushed to exit, but Ms Silva did not know the extent of their injuries. She said one man was in critical condition and not expected to survive.

Meanwhile, a shooting in the Midwestern city of Indianapolis that injured seven people may have been set off by two people bumping into each other in the street, police said.

Gunfire erupted about half an hour before the bars were to close at 3am in a neighbourhood popular with university students and other young people.

“It looks like it was two guys who bumped into each other and it took off from there. There was no rhyme or reason,” Indianapolis Police Chief Rick Hite said.

Police arrested a 23-year-old man on a preliminary charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm and questioned him. He was not charged in connection with the shooting, police spokesman Lt Chris Bailey said.

“We don’t know who the shooter was yet. Shooter or shooters,” Lt Bailey said.

Investigators were still trying to sort out what happened more than 12 hours later, and were hoping witnesses would come forward once the initial fear had worn down.
