South Africa’s poor and unsafe transport infrastructure has sparked passenger protests.

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele called the latest crash “unfortunate” and said a multi-billion-rand infrastructure improvement campaign was under way.

Medical rescue official Jeff Wicks said there had been “chaos” at the scene.

“We had people who were all around the trains, on arrival, paramedics found passengers from both trains lying on the track,” he said.
