Japanese on road to recovery

DRAMATIC pictures show the remarkable recovery in Japan after the tsunami.

The before and after images show roads and buildings, devastated by the natural disaster in March, now rebuilt and running normally.

The images were released as the Japanese government warned survivors will need long-term mental health care to protect them from debilitating conditions that could lead to suicide.

A report said survivors may be undergoing shock, stress and depression from the overwhelming losses. They may also feel guilty for escaping death.

More than 23,000 are dead or missing, and entire towns along Japan’s northeast coast were washed away.

The disaster also triggered a nuclear emergency and the mass evacuation of 80,000 people near the Fukushima reactors.
