At least one critically injured in New York building collapse

A dramatic fire has broken out in the East Village neighbourhood of New York, critically injuring at least one person.

The Fire Department of New York is at the scene of the massive fire and partial building collapse that broke out in the wake of an explosion at a Manhattan building tonight.

Orange flames and black smoke billowed from the facade and roof of the five-storey building in Manhattan, near New York University and the Washington Square Park area.

There are some reports of an explosion before the fire. The area is being evacuated.

The Fire Department of New York said other people are being evaluated at the scene.
