Teenage girl bomber kills at least five

A teenage female suicide bomber detonated her explosives-laden vest near police guarding the scene of an earlier bombing in Pakistan that left five people dead, authorities said yesterday, and officers had to carry victims to hospital in their arms.

The initial blast, in the north-western city of Peshawar, killed four police officers and a boy, while both attacks left at least 30 people injured. Police said a second female suicide bomber is believed to have been killed in the second explosion before she could detonate her vest. One of the females first threw a grenade, then was able to partially detonate her suicide vest, said a police official with the bomb disposal unit. She appeared to be aged just 16 or 17, he said. Another senior police official said the first explosion was caused by a remote-controlled bomb that went off as a truck drove past.
