Walking with Wounded team at base camp

The Walking with the Wounded expedition team arrived at Mount Everest Base Camp yesterday after a 10-day hike through the Himalayas.

Martin Hewitt, Captain Francis Atkinson, Captain David Wiseman, Private Jaco van Gass and Karl Hinett will live at the site more than three miles above sea level for the next seven weeks before their assault on the summit. The group, who were all injured fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, will spend the time acclimatising and training to overcome the hazards they will encounter on the world’s highest mountain. Pte van Gass, 25, said: “It’s been a long 10 days of acclimatisation and we’re finally at base camp. It’s a bit surreal.”
