Woman in court over bodies in freezer

Mitchelle Blair, from Detroit, has been arraigned in court on several counts via a video feed from police custody. She did not have a lawyer.

A prosecutor requested a high bond amount, saying Blair could face murder charges once investigators determine how the children died.

She was arrested on Tuesday after court officers serving an eviction notice discovered the bodies.

Prosecutors think her daughter, Stoni Ann Blair, was 13 years old and her son, Stephen Gage Berry, was nine when they died about two years ago.

Blair’s two other children have been placed in protective custody.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Blair with four counts of child abuse in the first degree, a felony carrying a possible sentence of 15 years.

She has also been charged with one count of committing child abuse in the first degree in the presence of another child, a felony, with a penalty of life or any term of years felony.

The bodies were discovered on Tuesday in a freezer during a court-ordered eviction of an apartment on Detroit’s east side.

The frozen bodies were identified as Blair’s 13-year-old daughter, Stoni Ann Blair (pictured below), and her 9-year-old son, Stephen Gage Berry.

“Even though we are issuing these charges today, this tragic case remains under investigation,” said Worthy.
