Wreckers smash up parked train

VANDALS smashed up a train in Leeds, leaving it extensively damaged.

Officers from British Transport Police (BTP) are investigating after the train was broken into on the tracks near Osmondthorpe Lane, Leeds.

It is believed the vandals trespassed onto the track through a boundary fence via East End Park around 9.45pm, entered the train and stole emergency hammers from the carriages. They then went on a rampage, smashing windows, magazine holders and luggage racks.

They also managed to break into the locked buffet cart, but failed to take anything as there was no stock left on board.

Pc Gavin Lawrence said: "This malicious damage has caused considerable destruction to the train and the cost of repairing it is running into the thousands. In total, 21 emergency hammers were taken, five magazine panels were smashed and three windows were completely smashed. Following a search of the area, officers located some of the items in the nearby park."

Pc Lawrence urged anyone with information about the incident on October 24 at 9.45pm to contact BTP.
