Write your own ode about the city

A COMPETITION has been launched to find poets who can pen the best verses about Hull.

Organisers of Heritage Open Days said anyone can take part – but verses must be related to the city. Budding writers are invited to hand in their work at Trinity Square on September 11 for judging by a panel. If they want they can read them out in front of Holy Trinity Church.

Prizes include 50 for the winner, 30 for second place and 20 for third as well as Larkin25 related goodies, courtesy of The Portland Hotel and Larkin25, which is marking the 25th anniversary of the poet Philip Larkin’s death. Poems can be up to 40 lines long.

Organiser Philip Haskins said: “We’ve never tried this format before. The poems can be negative or positive, personal or general, silly or serious, as long as they’re related to the city in some way.”
