Years of discussion near end for resort housing scheme

A DEAL will be signed today by developers and councillors to ensure that a massive housebuilding project on the Yorkshire coast becomes a reality more than 15 years after it was first mooted.

Scarborough Borough Council has secured the partnership agreement with K2 Regeneration, which is overseeing the multi-million pound Middle Deepdale scheme.

The Yorkshire Post revealed on Friday that details for the development are now being finalised before an outline planning application is submitted to the council, probably within the next month.

The formal agreement is now seen as a major step forward for the development, which has been touted since before the mid-1990s.

Council leader Tom Fox said: “After many years of discussions on a number of possible plans and solutions, I am delighted that we are now in a position to take this major regeneration project forward with confidence.

“It promises to give the local community a real boost and will begin to create much needed job opportunities in the area.”

The development will see North Yorkshire’s largest housing estate at Eastfield dramatically increase in size with more than 1,300 homes being built.

Plans also include ExtraCare housing for the elderly, a school, parks and retail outlets.

Work is expected to start by early 2012 if planning permission is secured and is due to take up to 15 years to complete.

The K2 Regeneration partnership overseeing the development involves Kebbell Developments Ltd and Keepmoat.
