Yet another morning of misery for rail passengers

RAIL passengers endured delays of up to two hours today on busy routes linking London and Yorkshire.

The problems were caused by a broken-down train at Huntingdon which led to severe hold-ups on a number of services in eastern England.

First Capital Connect services were unable to run between Peterborough and Huntingdon, while trains from Yorkshire operated by the East Coast, First Hull Trains and Grand Central companies were also affected, with delays up to 60 minutes.

This week has brought travel misery to many commuters, with morning rush-hour delays proliferating.

Delays of up to an hour were likely to continue between London and Peterborough until around noon.

There were also problems today for passengers travelling on CrossCountry services.

These were caused by a broken-down freight train near Burton-on-Trent, which led to delays of up to 45 minutes between Derby and Birmingham New Street.

In yet another incident, safety checks of the line being made between Halifax and Bradford Interchange caused disruption to Northern Rail services.

Trains from Halifax to Leeds were being cancelled or diverted, and a bus service had to operate between Halifax and Bradford Interchange
