Yob-hit traders buy CCTV cameras

SHOPKEEPERS in a South Yorkshire village plagued by repeated yob attacks have bought three CCTV cameras.

The cameras have been bought with the help of a grant from Barnsley Council's renaissance market towns team, and have been installed on Doncaster Road, Goldthorpe.

Residents in the former mining community have reported a wide range of problems with anti-social behaviour and the council said the cameras would help to "restore community confidence".

Work to improve the public areas outside the shops in Doncaster Road is also planned for early next year, and it is hoped the cameras, which will be monitored by local police, will deter vandalism.

Coun Bill Newman, Cabinet spokesman for development, said: "We are trying to achieve an improvement in the level of crime detection and reduce crime and the fear of crime for retailers and members of the community."
