York in chaos after pile-up hits roadway

MOTORISTS faced chaos in York after a suspected car thief was involved in a three-vehicle crash and traffic lights failed on one of the city’s main junctions.

Vehicles on the A64 were brought to a standstill yesterday after the collision forced part of the carriageway to close.

The incident, at around 11.15am near the Fulford Interchange, involved a grey Vauxhall Insignia, a black Toyota Avensis and a blue Mini.

The male driver of the Insignia received treatment at York District Hospital, where he was under bed watch after being arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft.

The Toyota driver, believed to be a local man, was also taken to the hospital suffering from a fractured wrist and a broken foot. The driver of the Mini, a woman from South Yorkshire, was uninjured.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said it would be inappropriate to comment further on the circumstances suntil a full investigation has been completed.”

Road closures were in place on both carriageways for around six hours, which caused major traffic delays amid heavy downpours and problems were compounded when traffic lights at Walmgate Bar failed at around 4pm.

Witnesses should call 0845 6060247.
