York Minster? It's in Spain, isn't it?

IT IS one of Yorkshire's most familiar landmarks, yet even 20 miles away people struggle to identify it, a survey has found.

York Minster has towered over the city since the 13th Century, but only three people in ten could correctly name it, with the remainder mistaking it for a Gothic cathedral in Spain, Italy or France.

One in 20 people thought it was in Belgium, and two per cent said it looked Scottish.

Even down the road in Leeds, more than half those questioned by the hotel chain Hampton by Hilton thought it was an overseas monument.

Victoria Gabb, general manager of the chain’s York hotel, said, “I have always recommended visiting York Minster as it is the landmark of our city and is especially beautiful lit up in the evening.”
