A 500-strong audience is expected for the Visit York Tourism Awards ceremony in the Great Hall of the National Railway Museum on May 26.

More than 150 businesses from across the city, from hotels to restaurants, pubs to visitor attractions, submitted their entries for the awards and have now been whittled down to 53 finalists.

In the majority of categories a panel of independent judges will decide on who will scoop an award, through a mix of mystery shopping and analysis against the entry criteria.

But this year, the public will be able to vote in the Best Café or Tearoom category, with eight cafés in contention to be crowned the best in York and the winner decided by an online public vote. A social media campaign on Twitter and Facebook will be launched to encourage public voting via an online survey.

Kate McMullen, Head of Tourism, Make It York, said: ‘We’re delighted to announce the finalists for the 2016 Tourism Awards, recognising the cream of the crop in tourism across the city and beyond.

“This is an opportunity for businesses to celebrate the fantastic things achieved over the last year, rewarding their staff and recognising the very best of York’s tourism sector.”
